The West Coast answer to Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite, this film (written by Simon and directed by Herbert Ross) has a high Hollywood gloss. Instead of the omnibus form of the film of the New York version, this film (set at the Beverly Hills Hotel) intertwines the stories (a la Grand Hotel) of several different sets of gusts, including Alan Alda and Jane Fonda and Walter Matthau and Elaine May, on one particularly eventful weekend. The story that works best involves Maggie Smith and Michael Caine as an Oscar-nominated actress and her straying, gay husband who come to an understanding (Smith won the Oscar for this film). The least effective is a slapsticky battle between well-to-do but competitive doctors played by Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor. –Marshall Fine

The Fly
David Cronenberg’s 1986 remake of the science fiction classic about a scientist who accidentally swaps body parts with a fly is both smart and terrifying: an allegory for the awful processes of slow death and a monster movie with a tragic spin. Jeff Goldblum gives a masterful performance as a sweet, nerdy scientist whose romance with a writer (Geena Davis) makes him more fully alive. Next thing you know, a tiny oversight in an experiment causes him to transmogrify, gradually, into something more like an insect than a human. This is Cronenberg (Scanners, Videodrome) country, so expect The Fly to be a gross-out, but in the way that disease corrupts the body and can make a loved one unrecognizable on every level. This is one of Cronenberg’s best films, and certainly one of the important movies of the 1980s. –Tom Keogh
The Fly II
Chris Walas, the effects whiz who turned Jeff Goldblum into the gooey, grotesqu Brundle-Fly in David Cronenberg’s The Fly, makes his directorial debut in this equally icky sequl. Eric Stoltz is Brundle’s genetically diseased offspring, a boy genius brought up in an experimental laboratory by a nefarious foster father eager to see what his inevitable metamorphosis will bring. No surprise here: like father, like son. Daphne Zuniga is his sweet young girlfriend, and John Getz reprises his role from the first film as a bitter alcoholic with a very bad fake beard. This cut- rate “Son of the Fly” knockoff pales next to Cronenberg’s classic, degenerating into a gory revenge flick. Walas strains under a limited budget, and many of the more elaborate creatures (a monstrously mutated dog, the skeletal fly monster leaping about the warehouse-like lab) are rather shabby. The makeup is suitably gooey, slathered in ooze and pus, and the mayhem-filled finale is a nasty but impressive over-the-top frenzy of blood and gore climaxing in the nastiest piece of poetic justice since Freaks. The opening birth scene (with a look-alike subbing for mom Geena Davis) is an homage to Larry Cohen’s It’s Alive. –Sean Axmaker

The classic teen novel of adolescent torment and forbidden love gets brought to the screen. When the father of four beautiful blond children is suddenly killed, their mother (Victoria Tennant, L.A. Story) takes them to the family home she fled 17 years earlier. Their fierce and frightening grandmother (Louise Fletcher, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest) locks them in an upstairs room, from which the only escape is into the cluttered and cobwebbed attic. The children’s isolation gets more and more extreme as their mother abandons them, finally even slowly poisoning them to gain her father’s inheritance. Sadly, the movie shies away from what made Flowers in the Attic such a hugely popular book–namely, the incestuous sex that began between the two older children, Cathy (Kristy Swanson, the movie version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Chris (Jeb Stuart Adams). Instead, the movie insinuates incestuous longing in all directions: Cathy’s father brings her special presents before he dies, Chris scrubs Cathy’s back in the tub, Chris has a noticeably stronger attachment to their mother than Cathy does–not to mention that the grandmother whips the half-naked mother in front of the grandfather. Fletcher brings a bit of bite to her role, and the movie occasionally rises to absurdly lurid zest. –Bret Fetzer

In 1943 John Ford gave the great cinematographer Gregg Toland (Citizen Kane, The Grapes of Wrath) an opportunity to direct his first film. What was intended to be a short documentary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor grew into a veritable epic, framed by a debate between Walter Huston’s Uncle Sam and Harry Davenport’s Mr. C on the tru nature of the Pacific paradise. Hawaiian history, rah-rah patriotism, and arguments over the loyalty of the Japanese-American population are capped by a stunning re-creation of the battle so convincing that feature films borrowed footage from it for decades. Arch and dated, it’s a fascinating slice of history that until a few years ago was never seen by the public. Toland’s criticisms of the American Navy caused it to be withheld until Ford could cut the 82-minute feature into a half-hour short, removing the history and analysis and concentrating solely on the battle and the recovery.
VCI’s release features Toland’s original cut as well as Movietone News and Universal newsreels of the attack and an unusual Japanese TV newscast covering the 1995 debut of this restored version in Japan.

Claudio Abbado gives a commanding performance in this production of Rossini’s comic opera The Barber of Seville. Hermann Prey brings to life Rossini’s character of Figaro and his hectic life with a terrific supporting cast of Teresa Berganza, Luigi Alva, Enzo Dara, and Paolo Montarsolo. Directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, the film is visually stunning and one can see why this production is destined to be a classic.
